Newhouse Academy construction students ‘Leave a Legacy.’
12th July 2023
In July of this year, construction students from Newhouse Academy, took part in a factory visit arranged by Morgan Sindall, responsible for delivering the school’s new build and refurbishment project, and Leach Steel, who have produced the 394 tonnes of steelwork needed.
Following a presentation on the manufacturing process of the structural steel (for the new school building) there was a discussion on the timelines and logistics of delivering a project such as this. Students then discussed the roles within an organisation like Leach Steel and future career opportunities in the sector, which is looking to address the skills shortage it currently faces by recruiting young people.
Students toured the factory’s production area, spanning three separate workshops and signed their names on a length of steel that was ready to be transported and erected as part of the new school.
By September, the steelwork had been erected and the construction students were given the opportunity to see the signed steel in-situ.
The range of programmes bringing to life the different elements that go into designing, constructing and managing a school project such as this was a really valuable experience for the construction students and truly an opportunity for them to leave their legacy.
