Commonly Asked Questions

How will you help my child settle in?

The transition from primary to secondary school can be a challenging experience for students and parents. We have in place a specialist Year 7 team and a carefully planned programme that makes this transition as smooth as possible. Students are placed in appropriate form groups suitable to their needs.

During the first few weeks at Newhouse Academy, Year 7 students are supported by staff, Prefects and Peer Mentors as they settle into their new environment. If your child is anxious about starting secondary school or you are concerned about their mental health and wellbeing, we have a team of trained counsellors and mentors in our SEMH team, who will meet with and support your child. We aim to involve parents fully so we can provide the best possible transition experience.

Where can my child go if they need support?

In order for students to maximise their achievement by performing to their best ability, we have strong and responsive systems to assist, guide and safeguard all our children. Non-teaching Heads of Year lead teams of dedicated Form Tutors who support, encourage and guide students through the many choices and challenges they face during secondary school.

Your child can access help and support through their Form Tutor, Head of Year or they can speak to a member of staff in the SEMH team if they have any concerns.

Will my child be able to access a full and broad curriculum at Newhouse Academy?

Our curriculum at Newhouse Academy improves and evolves every year to meet the high expectations not only of our students and their families but also our colleges, apprenticeship providers and employers. A curriculum is more than just the subjects we teach. Alongside a raft of excellent qualifications, we ensure that our students develop the necessary life skills to succeed on ambitious pathways when they leave us.

As part of Hollingworth Learning Trust we draw upon the expertise of staff across every department. This is so we can be confident that the subjects we offer are in line with high expectations not just locally across Rochdale, but nationally across secondary education.

Will my child be taught well at Newhouse Academy?

At Newhouse Academy, and across the Hollingworth Learning Trust, we believe that teaching and learning should be exciting, inspirational and highly effective. Above all, it should provoke thought, develop the imagination and open new doors to a wonderful, bright future. Teaching and learning is our passion and staff work tirelessly to unleash those aspirations.

We are proud of the fact that we have specialist teachers in all areas of the school and attract the brightest and the best teaching and support staff to work with us. We use a range of learning strategies throughout the school, ensuring that lessons are challenging, engaging and enjoyable. We have high expectations of all our students and support and encourage them to achieve their full potential. Being part of Hollingworth Learning Trust means that we are always looking to improve how our students learn.

Why should we choose Newhouse Academy as our secondary school choice?

Newhouse Academy is part of Hollingworth Learning Trust and has a Headteacher with extensive experience of school improvement, having supported, advised and led schools across the country. We utilise our partnership with Hollingworth Academy, to ensure Newhouse continues to make the necessary steps, becoming the school of choice in the community.

In September 2024 we opened a brand new net zero carbon school building with state-of-the-art facilities which operates alongside the current Newhouse building which opened in 2012. This incorporates a four-court sports hall, activity studio, drama studio, main hall, changing rooms, construction, engineering and design technology workshops, a dining hall, fitness studio, music rooms, science labs, graphics and food technology rooms, and related spaces.

We will do all we can to provide improved life chances for our students and the opportunity to develop personally and academically.
