Information outlines the impact of absences, over the course of an academic year.

Less than 5 days absence per year / 36 Lessons missed
Good attendance! These young people have the highest chances of securing at least 5 good GCSE grades, leading to better prospects for the future.  Students will also get into the habit of attending school regularly, which is a quality sought by future employers.

10 days absence per year / 60 lessons missed
These students are less likely to achieve good GCSE grades. Students who take a two week holiday every year can only achieve 95% attendance.

19 days absence per year / 114 lessons missed
The Government classes students in this group as ‘Persistently Absent’.  Students in this group are missing one month of school per year. It will be difficult for them to secure good GCSE outcomes and may affect their chances of securing their preferred college place or apprenticeship.

29 days absence per year / 174 lessons missed
Students in this group will find it almost impossible to keep up with the work being completed by their peers, meaning lower than expected GCSE grades and significant challenges when applying for college places or apprenticeship opportunities. Parents of young people in this group could face legal action being taken to court by the Local Authority.

Attendance Monitoring

Newhouse Academy uses a whole school approach to maintaining high expectations to improve attendance.

All student’s attendance is monitored weekly.

What to do if ....

What to do when your child is ill.

If your child is too unwell to attend school, please contact 01706 369436 and select option 1 for the absence team. A member of the team will discuss the absence with you. Your child’s attendance record will be displayed and any patterns in absence will be raised.
If your child has a cough/ cold or low level ailment we encourage them to attend school.
If you leave a message on the answering machine because the line is busy a member of the team will call you back.

What to do if your child is late.

If your child is late due a genuine reason please contact school on 01706 369436 and select option 1 for the attendance team. The reason for the late arrival will be discussed. Students who are late regularly or who are late without a valid reason will be placed in a 30-minute detention that day and parents will be notified by message.

What to do if my child has an appointment.

We encourage parents, where possible, to organise all appointments outside of school hours. If it is unavoidable, and your child has an appointment in school time, we ask that they attend school before and after the appointment, to limit the impact on lessons missed.

Please contact school on 01706 369436 and select Option 1 for the attendance team to inform of the appointment. Please provide school with a copy of the letter/ appointment card for the time missed.

What to do if you are going on holiday in term time.

We ask parents to avoid any holidays in term time and use the 13 weeks’ holiday time. If you do decide to go on holiday in term time, please inform school in writing with the dates of absence. All holidays in term time are not authorised by the academy and may incur a penalty notice fine.

What to do if my child’s SEN is preventing them from attending.

Please contact Mrs Lunn, SENDCO on 01706 369436 to discuss what support is available and to ensure a bespoke plan is implemented to support you and your child.  You could also discuss with your child’s head of year, form tutor or a member of the attendance team.

Visit the SEND and SEMH page for more information

What to do if I’m worried about my child’s mental health.

Please contact your child’s Head of Year and/or Miss Wilson, Social Emotional Mental Health Practitioner in the academy. Please call 01706 369436 and ask for the relevant person.

Externally there are a number of options available:
